What is Post-Baby-Body Syndrome?
Post-Baby-Body Syndrome is the clinical name, developed by
the Avalon Clinic, to describe women who experience physical
changes in their bodies after the post-partum period that
persist despite exercise, diet, and nutritional treatment. These
changes are often permanent. Pregnancy naturally leads to
changes in a woman’s body, which can be either partially or
totally reversed. However, in some women the changes persist
long after the post partum period despite good intentions and
best efforts on their part.
A "Mommy Makeover" is the term used
when mothers have cosmetic surgery to reverse the changes of pregnancy
and breastfeeding.
Women after pregnancy generally are divided into two main groups:
- The first group can return their body to normal or near normal with exercise
and proper diet.
- The second group, despite all efforts (exercise, diet, etc) cannot un-do the
changes that have occurred. Those changes are permanent, persistent and do not
respond to conservative modalities of treatment.
What are the criteria for Post-Baby-Body Syndrome?
Stretched and Loose Skin
Often the skin is stretched and loose and does not have the ability to snap back
normally as skin with good tone does. This is because the fascia (tissue holding
the muscles, particularly the muscles of the abdomen) has been stretched. No
amount of exercise or sit-ups will return this skin to normal. This can
often be treated with a Tummy
Tuck.
Breast Changes
After pregnancy, the breasts may be larger or smaller, but a greater percentage
of women who experience shrinking breasts, resulting in a loss of breast volume.
In addition, there can be a difference from one side to the other, with the
breast being
asymmetrical and uneven as a result. Depending on each woman's
unique situation there are a variety of
cosmetic breast surgeries
available.
Added Weight
There is often increased weight in the hips and outer thigh areas. This, along
with widening of the pelvis, leads many women to experience an unwanted
expansion of the hip region. many woman choose to have
Liposcution in this
region after pregnancy.
Other Post-Partum Changes
There can be changes in the floor of the pelvis resulting in dysfunctional
urination and bladder control. The pelvic area is often widened, looser and may
have a slight tilt. There are often vaginal changes that occur as well.
